Extreme Detour

Driving into my neighborhood last night, I come up the hill and come upon a very unexpected scene. Generators. Flood lights. Tents set up. White vans and trucks. Police directing traffic away from the intersection. It looked like a scene out of the X-Files - unfortunately Mulder fell off my Top-5 and I didn't have his digits handy.  Wasn't clear what was going on though.  A fire?  A murder?  There was a detour set up through the neighborhood - kind of a whacky route really - to get to my house.  All a long it were no parking signs from 9/26 to 10/4.  Wow - that's...

How do you know?

I often think back to the sports I did in junior high and high school, and the things our coaches had us do.  I had some great coaches back in the day - Mr. Jones as my Cross Country coach in junior high - Mr. Brown as a track coach in high school, and later Les Schroll as my cycling coach.  All of them played a big part in helping me grow as a person and as an athlete. But one thing that I think about is some of the things that were conventional wisdom back then, and stated as...

Wrapping up an "Epic" year

After IMC, Deb and I were having that inevitable "now what?" feeling.  Most of the prior 12 months had been focused on Ironman, pretty much to the exclusion of everything else.  I made the observation that I, for the rest of my life, was likely to look back on the year fondly as my "Epic Year".  Not sure where I came up with that naming, but it seemed to fit. In any case, reflecting back, it's been an amazing year in totality, and a reflection of what a lucky guy I am to be able to do the things I do: Trips...

Ironman Canada 2007 Race Report

Okay, so it's a little late given the race was over two weeks ago, but nonetheless here's now it went...as always it's long and self absorbed. :) In a nutshell, it’s been a little over four months since IMAZ and I’ve put in a ton of hard work. It’s easy to let goal creep set in and forget that in terms of physiology, four months isn’t that long, especially when almost a month on one end is race-recovery, and two weeks on the other end are taper. That said… Prerace... I totally get...

New Look!

For the last few years, I've been running on a bogging platform that Brian wrote from scratch.  It's been great.  However, there's been a few things that I've wanted to do with the blog (like use Windows Live Writer), that it doesn't support.  So in order to accomplish this I decided to switch over to using SubText so that I have lots of room to customize things and generally get myself into trouble.  SubText comes with a bunch of canned themes, and I picked this one mostly for the full-width text.  If you hate it let me know, I may...
